Lightning strikes kill around 2000 Indians every year 

A lightning strike has killed around 18 people and injured many more in Jaipur. The victims were taking selfies in the rain on top of a watch tower at the Amer Fort, which is a popular tourist attraction in the city. Uttar Pradesh has recorded 12 deaths and Madhya Pradesh also has had casualties.  


It has been reported that lightning strikes kills around 2,000 Indians on average every year. Lightning is the biggest contributor to accidental deaths due to natural causes. Several thousand thunderstorms occur over India every year and many of them involve lightning. There has been an increasing trend of lightning especially near the Himalayan foothills. Lightning rarely hits people directly but when it strikes it is almost always fatal. People are most commonly struck by “ground currents” by people get struck by electric shock. Scientists have said lightning strikes are more common in areas with thinner tree cover, leaving people vulnerable to being struck
