 Sunil Mittal, Airtel: Telecom sector under stress

With the pandemic and slowdown in various sectors, Telecom sector has had it good. With WFH and a lot of businesses going online, the demand for mobile, data connectivity was at an all time high. However the telecom sector isn’t a rosy picture for the telecom operators. In this regard, Bharti Airtel chairman Sunil Mittal said the telecom industry is under tremendous stress and needs government’s help to keep the momentum going. He said he didn’t know what norms the government would apply but is sure the government is concerned about the sector.


Mittal’s was speaking to reporters at a virtual event of OneWeb, a satellite communications company led by Bharti Global. His comments are of particular importance as Airtel’s rival Vodafone Idea has approached the government for a one-year moratorium on payment of spectrum instalment of over ₹8,200 crore. He said that the tariffs need to go up to keep it sustainable as the telecom sector is under tremendous stress. He also said that Airtel wouldn’t hesitate to raise tariffs but wouldn’t be the only one to do it.
