Government approves Moderna vaccine for emergency use

The government on Tuesday cleared the fourth vaccine for emergency use in the country, the US-made Moderna. This paves the way for its Indian partner Cipla to import the first mRNA Covid-19 vaccine into India for restricted emergency use. The commercial usage is still under talks. Moderna is the first internationally developed vaccine to be granted a waiver from conducting bridging trials in India. As per reports, the vaccine is initially expected to be offered to India in limited quantities which will be as donations by the US drug maker.

Moderna has the highest efficacy compared to the four vaccines - it is 94 per cent effective compared to Sputnik (91 per cent), Covaxin (77.8 per cent) and Covishield (74 per cent). Both Pfizer and Moderna have requested for indemnity from liability due to adverse effect of the vaccine. Indian Government has not granted indemnity to any vaccine-maker as yet.
